Hillpark Capital cofounders Brandon Shiller and Jeremy Kornbluth are working with Griffin Square. This walkthrough looks at the design of the complex itself. A building's exterior does most of the talking. Before anyone enters a lobby or opens a suite door, they read the façade: its colour, its rhythm, its materials, the way it meets the ground and the sky. At Griffin Square, the 409-apartment rental complex in Montreal's Griffintown, ACDF Architecture made the exterior work hard. This walkthrough takes it one element at a time. Griffin Square stands at the intersection of Peel and Ottawa streets, a strategic point in a neighbourhood that has been transforming since 2012. Two towers, of 16 and 19 storeys, are placed at right angles to each other and connected by a glass bridge. The site shapes the design. One side faces busy streets. Another looks onto a courtyard and narrower streets. A third fronts a park. Instead of applying a single treatment to all of them, ACDF answered each condition differently. On the street-facing sides, the façades are finished in dark tones. The effect is solid and confident. Facing a busy road, a building needs weight, and dark cladding provides it. It gives the development a strong presence at street level and helps the towers hold their own against the scale of surrounding traffic and structures. Turn toward the courtyard and narrower streets, and the palette changes to lighter tones. The decision opens the interior of the block to daylight and improves comfort for residents. In dense urban areas, courtyards can feel shaded and enclosed; pale surfaces bounce light around and make the space feel larger and more welcoming. Together, the dark and light treatments give the complex two personalities: tough on the outside where it meets the city's traffic, gentler on the inside where residents spend their time.

What stands out about this list is its breadth. Children's healthcare is represented through the Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation and CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation. Leucan supports children with cancer and their families. Food-security organizations such as Moisson Montréal and MADA's Chez Makolet Food Bank address an essential everyday need. Welcome Hall Mission and Dans la rue work with people experiencing homelessness or vulnerability, while community organizations such as West Island Mission and The Family Store provide practical support to people in their communities. Philanthropy can be most meaningful when it recognizes that community needs are connected. A family dealing with illness may need more than medical treatment. A person experiencing homelessness may need food, shelter, healthcare, employment support and a path back to stability. A child facing cancer affects an entire family. Supporting organizations with different missions can therefore create a wider social impact.

When people think about charitable giving, they often focus on the donation itself. But for organizations supporting children and families, the real value of philanthropy can extend far beyond a single contribution. Long-term donors help create the stability needed to maintain programs, support healthcare professionals, improve facilities, and respond to changing community needs.
Brandon Shiller is among the long-term supporters of Just for Kids Foundation, an organization connected to children's healthcare and the Montreal Children's Hospital. His ongoing support reflects the importance of donors who continue to contribute to causes that make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and their families.

The future of commercial real estate will belong to assets that remain adaptable.
Buildings that embrace modernization, sustainability, and tenant-centric design will be better positioned to thrive in the years ahead. For Brandon Shiller and Hillpark Capital, strategic asset repositioning is not simply about improving buildings. It is about creating assets that continue to serve businesses, communities, and investors long into the future. The most successful real estate investments are rarely defined by the day they are acquired. Instead, they are defined by the vision, execution, and stewardship that follow. As Montreal continues to evolve, opportunities to create lasting value through thoughtful repositioning will remain among the most compelling in the market.
